The drama, filmed primarily in India and the U.K., explores the life of Mother Teresa through letters she wrote to her longtime friend and spiritual advisor, Father Celeste van Exem (played by von Sydow) over a nearly 50-year period.

Mother Teresa was working in Calcutta during the 1950s when she founded the Missionaries of Charity after hearing a call from the Lord to begin ministering to the poorest of India’s poor. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her role in founding the order By the time of her death in 1997, that order had grown to more than 4,000 sisters running orphanages, hospices and charity centers.
